Almost every part our body, from the head to toe, is prone to fungal infection. Fungi are present everywhere from the external environment to our skin. Typical fungi act as both our enemy and friend. It does so for its survival. Fungal infections are very common and generally grow around the nail, foot, toe etc. Athlete’s foot is a well known example of this. Here the fungus grows in between the toes due to accumulated moisture and sweat. The fungus grows rapidly in such an environment hence it should be cured in the initial stages itself.
Fungal infections can become very severe at times. Since the fungus spreads vastly the area of infection is increased thereby making it painful. One of the early symptoms of fungal infection is rigorous itching causing the infection to spread further. The callous itching makes the infected skin even more sore and red. The fungi that infects the nail leaves it discoloured, thick and very coarse. The nail growth is deformed and hardened.
Sometimes even a simple rash can lead to fungal infection. Ringworm is a familiar rash caused by fungal infection. it is advisable to make sure even tiny rashes caused due to bruise, nappy or even chemicals are given due attention. There are three different categories when it comes to fungal nail infections. These are dermatophytes, saprophytes, and yeasts. All these three have different sources and usually require different treatments for each of them. Thus, it is extremely important that you identify exactly what kind of infection it is.
The most common of the three are dermatophytes, which break down the protein in the nails, skin cells and hair. As this type of infection has been studied closely, it is easier to identify, although it belongs to a different genera. This why it can be differentiated from other types of fungi that are isolated from the nails.
The second group known as saprophytes is environmental fungi and breakdown decaying organic matter. Although this type of fungi does not usually cause nail infection, they may do so in particular individuals who have certain conditions. The significance of these fungi with regard to fungal nail infections is still unclear.
The third group is yeast, and although they are not really nail infection fungi, they can infect nails. They attack the soft tissue near the nails, and this condition can be extremely painful. People whose feet are constantly exposed to wet or humid conditions are more likely to contract this kind of infection. Yeast infections also surface much faster than the ones caused by dermatophytes. This condition can become unbearable, so anyone who contracts it should seek treatment straight away.

Fungus on one’s skin causes fungal skin infections. There are different kinds of fungal skin infections. Depending on the type of infection, the appearance also differs, as do the symptoms. Some of them appear to be red, scaly and itchy, whereas others are similar to how dry skin looks.
These infections live off keratin, which is a protein that makes up hair, skin and nails. The type of bacteria and also the area that they infect can identify fungal infections.
The most common factor involving the contraction of fungal skin infections is moist skin. When sweat does not evaporate properly or when a cut or a graze is not allowed to heal properly is when fungal infections are most likely to occur.
These infections can spread very easily to other people and especially in common areas that have a moist atmosphere such as swimming pool locker, gyms and shower rooms. Although they usually occur on and around the foot, they may also spread to other areas of the body if not taken care of properly and in time.
Most fungal skin infections are surface based. Therefore, a topical cream, lotion or ointment can take care of it. Some doctors may also prescribe pills which will try and directly clean up the bloodstream. Natural creams, lotions and ointments are also excellent methods of treating fungal skin infections.

Fungal skin infections usually occur where skin surfaces meet. This can be between the toes, or at joints such as armpits, the genital area and the breasts. A lot of these fungal skin infections exist on the upper layer of skin and do not penetrate deeper.
The feet, especially the toes are very susceptible to these infections. People who wear socks and shoes throughout the day, especially in warm offices, tend to suffer if they ignore their feet. Diagnosis of fungal skin infections is better left to experienced medical professionals. They will examine skin samples under a microscope.
A specialist will be able to tell exactly what kind of an infection it is and will also be able to give proper guidance as to how to treat it and what sort of after care measures should be taken.
Fungal skin infections must be taken care of as soon as possible as they can be discomforting and are definitely not a very pretty sight. If not taken care of in time, an infection may spread.
