Fungal nail infections are not to be taken lightly

July 14, 2009

Fungal nail infections are extremely common and this has meant that people tend to ignore them when they occur. The infection starts with a small white or yellow dot on the nail and then spreads throughout the nail area. But if you ignore the warning signs, it can lead to bigger problems. It is important to treat this condition in its early stages, so that it does not spread any further.

The initial symptoms of fungal nail infection are brittle, distorted and thickened nails that are yellow or brown in colour. In some cases, the nail moves further away from the skin and emits a smell. If not taken care of, the nail infection can cause permanent damage to the nail with the risk of it spreading to other body parts. The nail infection can also cause a discharge of pus, high fever and swelling.

It is highly important to make sure that nail infections are treated. A nail infection should not be looked upon as a cosmetic problem, since the damage it causes can be permanent.

It is imperative to care for your nails just like any other part of your body. Fungal infections are more serious than they look, as they can spread very easily and cause great discomfort and pain.
